Je – Burnt Offering

dance EN friendly

Choreographer Hyerim Jang’s <Je – Burnt Offering> draws inspiration from the Old Testament concept of the Burnt Offering. Just as the ritual was not merely the act of presenting a sacrifice but of burning it so that its fragrance would rise to the divine, Jang finds profound beauty in the human act of “burning” time and life to create meaning. The piece reinterprets this as a modern ritual, exploring the dignity and sacredness of human existence within the repetition of labor.

Since its premiere at Skånes Dansteater in Malmö, Sweden, in 2019, the work has continued to deepen in expression and refinement through three artistic approaches — visual expression through drawing, auditory exploration using instruments, breath, and language, and olfactory elements completing the ritual experience — each expanding the depth and completeness of the work’s expression.

99Art Company

99Art Company, founded in 2014 and led by choreographer Hyerim Jang, pursues dance that “resonates with the soul” by merging the essence of Korean traditional culture with contemporary sensibilities. Viewing tradition not as a fixed form but as an evolving and living artistic language, the company presents sincere works under the vision of “Korean dance + contemporary art.”

After Jang was named Best Choreographer at the Critics’ Choice Awards in 2015, the company has been invited to major stages and festivals in Korea and abroad, including the Changmu International Dance Festival, Seoul International Performing Arts Festival, Operaestate Festival, Open Look Festival, SESC Dance Biennale, and Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA). Through these performances, 99Art Company continues to share its unique aesthetic that bridges the traditional and contemporary dimensions of Korean dance with global audiences.
